Chapter Seventeen
Gritting her teeth, Jessica pointed at the lock and almost cast her handy lock-picking spell. The bank beat her to it, sliding the metal deadbolt back into place inside the door with a flash of blue light while the yellow glow of the witchâs unused magic faded from her fingertip.
With the other handful of flames at the ready, she pulled open the door just a few inches and muttered, âWe open at sevenââ
âWho the hell are you?â The growl came from somewhere in the vicinity of Jessicaâs waist, and she looked down just in time to see a curly mop of black hair falling over a black leather jacket. âNever mind. I donât have time for this shit. Move.â
A thick, hairy hand slapped against the door and shoved it open. Jessica staggered sideways, yanked by her hand still gripping the handle. Then the curly black hair muscled past her into the bankâs lobby. âHey! You canât just barge in here like that. What do you think youâreââ
The Dwarf dressed like a biker spun around and pointed a wicked-looking blade right at the bank ownerâs chin. âI donât know who you think you are, you littleâ¦girl. But you answered the door, so donât tell me you donât know why Iâm here.â
Jessica looked from the tip of that long blade to the Dwarfâs ruddy cheeks nearly covered by the wiry black beard sprouting from his face in every direction. The flames in her hand blazed to four times their previous size with a little whoosh of air. âWatch it, bud.â
The Dwarf snorted and wiggled the tip of the blade at her. âYou donât scare me. What are you? Ten? Where the fuckâs Tabitha?â
His heavy black riding boots clomped across the lobby floor, the chains dangling from his leather chaps and leather jacket clinking against each other with every step.
Without thinking, Jessica unleashed a fireball half the size of her fist. It hurtled across the lobby and froze in midair, crackling in front of the Dwarfâs face and stopping him in his tracks. âI said weâre closed.â
Her newest and pushiest client didnât move away from the flaming ball flickering just inches from his face, even when a few of his scraggly beard hairs came dangerously close to starting a facial fire. Then he turned his head enough to shoot her a sidelong glance and muttered, âNo youâre not.â
âOpen at seven, Dwarf. So feel free to skip on out of here and come back in about twenty-five minutes. Iâm happy to help if you need a littleââ
A blue spark of energy shot straight up from the floor and into the back of her spell hand.
âDamnit!â Jessica shook out her hand with a hiss. The flames hovering in front of the Dwarf snuffed out, and she reflexively let go of the door handle to rub the back of her hand. The door clicked shut again, the crow and bell clacking against the glass. This asshole bank!
A rumbling, condescending chuckle rose from the Dwarfâs parted lips before he stomped all the way back to the desk.
